The Ile de Ré is an island in the Atlantic located north of Bordeaux and south of Paris. The next city on the mainland is La Rochelle. The island is connected with the mainland by a very long bridge – there is a toll fee for cars to be paid when you drive onto the island (about 20Euro).

By car it takes about 5 hours to get from Paris to the island.

Maps and the distances to other European cities can be found here at mapquest.

The high velocity train from Paris to La Rochelle takes about 3 hours.

From Paris Charles De Gaulle airport (CDG Paris) you have to first get to the RER terminal- you have to go to Terminal 2 (GARE) with the airport train system. Buy a ticket there and take the RER in direction to Paris, change trains in Denfert-Rocherau. Then take Line 6 direction Etoile and get off at Montparnasse. Take the TGV (high speed train) from Gare de Montparnasse to La Rochelle Ville.
From there it is possible to take the bus (REBUS) to Ste.Marie.
One can also rent a car in La Rochelle (the Europcar station is very close to the train station) or one can take a taxi to get from the train station to the house; that costs around 35Euro one way. The island taxi should be ordered in advance:

Taxi Beatrice 05 46 07 69 48 or 06 24 77 27 4

Here is the link to book French trains (destination:  La Rochelle):
http://www.voyages-sncf.com/leisure/fr/launch/home/.

We strongly recommend an early reservation as one is only allowed on the train with a booked seat (no standing in the aisles…) and particularly around the weekends and on holidays this connection is highly sought after.

La Rochelle airport is only about 20 minutes by car from the house - but the air traffic is not directed over our village so one will not notice any of it.
There are flights from Paris to La Rochelle and a very cheap way to get to La Rochelle is from London-Stansted with RyanAir: http://ryanair.com/.
