Our House in Ste. Marie on Ile de Ré

Our house is located in Ste. Marie de Ré close to the old village center in a very quiet, albeit very narrow, picturesque street. The house has been owned by the same family for over 40 years. The last long term resident was a painter who was fascinated by the picturesque island and above all the unique quality of the light. We continue to try to maintain the special character of the house. The house is attached on the Northern side of the neighboring house and therefore it remains pleasantly cool throughout the hot summer days.

8 - 10 people


the living space adds up to about 150 m², the yard has about 200 m².

The Courtyard

The beautiful courtyard covers about 200 square meters = 1860 sq. ft. and has sun all day long.  There is plenty of garden furniture and a table for extensive family meals outdoors. The courtyard is bordered by a typical high (3 m = 9 ft. height) stonewall which provides complete privacy. A grill and some beach equipment is available for use by our guests.

All rooms are open to the courtyard, i.e. the rooms are not connected with each other directly; so you have to go through the courtyard in order to get from the large living room (with fireplace) to the bathroom, to the kitchen or to the upstairs. The stairway to the upstairs bedrooms also leads up directly up from the courtyard; a little covered balcony upstairs is very pleasant for a siesta (there is a hammock!) or enjoying the outdoors even during inclement weather sitting at the little coffeehouse table. The Ile de Ré has as many sun hours as the Riviera!

The Living Quarters

The kitchen is furnished with a table, 6 stools, gas stove, large refrigerator, oven, sink, kitchen utensils and china for ten people, coffee- and espresso machine plus a toaster with grill, a dishwasher, washing machine and a dryer (although you can also dry your laundry on the clotheslines outside).

The large (55 square meters = 510sq.ft.) living room with a gorgeous fireplace has a dining table plus chairs for eight people plus another oval table with chairs for four additional people, a convertible sofa, a leather sofa, two antique cupboards (with games, books, sheets and towels) and a moveable easel.

There is a long hallway upstairs from which all bedrooms can be reached. The whole upstairs has beautiful wood floors.

Upstairs there are 4 large bedrooms, three of them equipped with a sink with hot and cold water.
One bedroom has two single beds, the other three bedrooms have a queen size (double) bed each. All in all there is room to comfortably house eight people.

In addition, the sofa in the living room can be transformed into a double bed for two additional guests, so it is possible to house up to ten adults. We also have a portable bed for small children ready to use and a high chair for the little ones.

The downstairs bathroom has a toilet, an open shower and two sinks. This bathroom has been completely renovated in 2010. The upstairs bathroom is equipped with shower, sink, and toilet.

Practicalities

Bedding and sheets are available in suitable quantities.
In general we ask our customers to bring their own towels if possible.
There are enough towels available in the house, although unfortunately the number usually decreases during the season and we particularly advise people to bring their own beach towels.

Guests are also welcome to use our duvet covers (the blankets are sized 155x220 and 200x220, measured in centimeters) and the manager can help you to locate the right ones for the covers on your bed. But of course you are welcome to bring your own!

For washing the house laundry AFTER your departure the manager will charge 8 Euro per washing machine load.

Costs for the electricity used during your stay will be deducted from your deposit (350Euro) which you have to leave with the manager upon arrival or pay together with the final rent payment; it will be returned to you after your departure.

Cars can be parked in the immediate vicinity of the house on the street or on a larger parking lot at the church and another one in front of the town hall (the latter are both about a 2-minutes-walk from the house).

Telephone in the house:
(33) for France (0)5 46 27 06 67 ; you can use this phone with a prepaid phone card and you can receive calls from elsewhere as well, of course. There is also an answering machine, which can be used at your convenience.

There is free Internet access (wireless) available for our guests.

The house can be occupied from April to October comfortably without extra heating, as the climate is very mild. During the colder months one needs to use electrical space heaters.

Usually there is plenty of wood available in the courtyard which one can use for fires in the living room fire place.

The manager is fluent in English!
